More than deli sandwiches

Monday, September 7, 2009 by Brandy Ison
Yes, we serve the best deli meats in Indianapolis but we also have a lot of other items to offer.  How about a Jewish comfort meal like corned beef and cabbage, brisket, or stuffed cabbage?

We also have meatloaf, baked chicken, and stuffed peppers.  Don't forget our freshly prepared sides: macaroni and cheese, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, potato pancake, and lots more.

The weather is starting to cool down so maybe you'd like to try one of our soups: matzo ball, chicken noodle, cabbage borscht, chili, or one of our soups of the day.

No matter what you're in the mood for, Shapiro's has it all.  Come in and enjoy one of our delicious and hearty meals.

Have you met our manager Carl?

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Brandy Ison
Carl has been with Shapiro's for over 20 years.  Most people know him for his "New York" style way of working the cafeteria line here.  You might hear him saying, "Young lady" or "Young man" as he calls the next person up to place their order.  He is always trying to make people laugh by saying stuff like, "this is the first reuben we've sold all year" when everyone knows that our reubens are one of the most popular sandwiches.  Ordering mayonnaise on your sandwich always gets him to tease you a little bit.  So next time you are in our Indianapolis Deli, make sure you say hi to Carl, and don't forget the mayonnaise :)

Shapiro's Past & Present Owners

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Brandy Ison
I asked some of our employees to share memories about our past and current owners.  Shapiro's has been the place to get Kosher Style Food in Indianapolis for over 100 years.  Without these great leaders, Shapiro's would not be the great deli that it is today.

Max Shapiro
Max would come in and bake all of his own items around 3:30 or 4:30am.  He would work right there with you and would be here from sunrise to sunset.  He took care of all of his employees and would teach you anything you wanted.  He was a great person and is truly missed by everyone.

Mort Shapiro
Mort would come in with a cigar and stock market book in his hand.  He would sit at the front table, smoke his cigar, and watch all of the employees through the mirrors.  He would do anything for his employees.  He was definitely a business man.  He, too, was a great person and is truly missed by everyone.

Brian Shapiro- Current Owner
Brian is a very giving person.  He helps out employees and customers just like they are family.  His door is always open.  He is very educated, holding multiple degrees.  He is very concerned and involved with the youth.  He is a great inspiration to all of us.

Shapiro's 1905

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Brandy Ison
After emigrating to America in 1903 from Odessa, Russia, Louis Shapiro opened a small grocery store in Downtown Indianapolis with his wife Rebecca and their eight children. Louis was a grocer by trade, previously operating the American Grocery Company in his homeland. The original downtown grocery, still located on South Meridian Street, was an 18-foot-wide space, where the Shapiro family called upstairs home. Sales of canned goods, pickles, mayonnaise, and kosher deli meats were brisk.  Now over 100 years later, the Indianapolis Deli is still going strong.

Customer Rave

Thursday, July 2, 2009 by Brandy Ison

Customers are raving about the new grill menu at our Carmel Indiana Deli.  One customer said his hamburger was "the best I've ever had".  Other customers have said "You can't beat the price for such a big sandwich".  It is Jewish style grilling with lots of garlic, onions, lemon, and seasonings.  So come see us at our Carmel store patio.  M-F 11:30 - 2   Sat-Sun 11:30-7  Nice days through the summer only.
