MEET CARL AND LAURA

Saturday, June 25, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
carl and lauraOn the left is Carl, a manager who has worked at Shapiro's Deli for 23 years.  He started as a busser, worked 9 years in the kitchen, and knows just about everything there is to know about the food, the building, the equipment, and the customers!  Carl is from Jackson, Kentucky, a good old boy who has more energy than most of the "young folks".  Carl NEVER misses a day of work and in fact, he comes in on holidays to make sure that none of our equipment takes a day off.  Most weekdays you will see Carl working the meat slicer, calling "young man" and "young lady" to everyone in line.

On the right is Laura, who happens to be my lovely daughter.  She has worked at Shapiro's Deli downtown and in the Carmel deli for the last 6 years.  She is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology at Butler University and will be a senior in the coming academic year.  Laura is pretty quiet but super efficient.  She works part time in our office, along with serving customers as a Deli Clerk and prep person in our "salad" department.  Carl has known her since she was 6 years old!  We call him "uncle Carl" at my house and Laura has learned a lot from him.  They really work great together.

Hey, did you see those yummy cakes in the display case behind them?  You won't find any better cheesecakes in Indianapolis!  Come in for a cake and be sure to say "Hi" to Carl and Laura!

A BIRDS EYE VIEW

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
This is a great photo taken by Sally Shapiro, showing the beginning of the serving line at our downtown deli.  It is a great view and represents the efforts of the bakers working throughout the night, along with the morning staff who comes in at 5:30 to begin preparations for the day.  Pots will be boiling in the kitchen with soups, meats, vegetables, and noodles; lettuce will be crisping in the sink; fruit will be washed and hand cut; cakes will be frosted; cheesecakes will be topped with whipped cream; rye bread will be baking; and the garlic dill pickles will be cut into spears before some of you have left your house in the morning.  This serving line will be emptied and filled many times in its 13 1/2 hour shift!  The dishes will be washed and sanitized many, many times throughout the day and evening.  The closing manager will put the restaurant "to bed" at night and then we will begin the process again each morning 363 days a year.  Thanks for coming to our house!  Please stop by again soon!

WARMING UP THE GRILL IN CARMEL

Friday, June 17, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Back by popular demand - the grill on the patio at Shapiro's in Carmel!  Beginning Monday, June 20th, we will be firing up the grill for lunch at the Carmel deli.  Try a beef burger, beef frank, chicken or steak sandwich with a bag of chips.  There will be lots of cold beverages on hand and you can add a side of our famous potato salad or cole slaw for $1.75.   Stop by from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. any day of the week and we will cook your food to order just the way you want it (weather permitting - you just never know here in Indiana).  If it is raining come inside and get that Reuben you've been thinking about anyway.  Looks like I will be needing to head to Carmel for a meeting around lunch time one day next week. I absolutely love the steak sandwiches.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Friday, June 17, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
marybelle This is Marybelle, who has worked at Shapiro's Deli for 56 YEARS this month!!  She has probably done just about everything, but has been working in the kitchen full time for many years.  She can find her way around a huge piece of beef with a carving knife like nobody else.  Her taste buds are impeccable - if we have a question about anything food related, Marybelle is the company expert.  She has trained many, many people over the years with kindness and patience.  Today she is getting ready for a busy Father's Day weekend.  We are so lucky to have her here at Shapiro's Deli!

STADIUM VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
I have never professed to be a photographer, but here are a few photos from the market tonight.  These are local folks, growing and producing local products.  A few of the vendors are setting up monthly and some weekly.  Be sure to ask about your favorites.  My dog, Zoey, is waiting for the doggie treats which will return next Tuesday night.  Last week I got a bottle of Calypso wine from my favorite wine maker, Dave Smith of Smith's Winery.  I will be sharing that with my sister in St. Louis when I visit in a few weeks.  There was a close call a few weeks ago, when I almost developed a granola addiction!  Stop by, shop, and then come to Shapiro's for a $5 Corned Beef Sandwich, which is our Tuesday night dine-in special in honor of the Stadium Village Farmers Market.  More local produce will be appearing as we get into the growing season.  Stay tuned!

HAVE YOU JOINED THE EMAIL CLUB?

Sunday, May 15, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Congratulations to Jerry Donaldson of Greenfield, Indiana, who won a $50 gift card from Shapiro's Deli!  Jerry is a member of our email club.  He read in our May 2010 newsletter that we were accepting submissions from our email club members.  Just tell us a memory of a Mother's Day that you spent at Shapiro's and tell us why is was special to you.  Jerry wrote a very nice account of a Mother's Day that he remembered at Shapiro's and was awarded a $50 gift card!  Below is Jerry's story:

"The story that comes to mind is when we as a family finally got her to go with us to eat out...she always preferred to stay home and cook for us at a get-together on Mom's day.  She would always turn us down to take her out for that day.  Finally, after hearing us talk about Shapiro's for years, she relented and allowed the 5 of us to go to lunch/dinner at the deli.  I can remember what she had to eat, even after 22 years...she had liver and onions and mac and cheese, which she enjoyed to the fullest.  It was the greatest day.  The sad part of the story is it was the last Mother's Day we would spend together...she passed away 3 months later at the age of 72.  Rest in Peace Mom."
