STADIUM VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET

Tuesday, August 17, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
I just spent a good deal of time at the Stadium Village Farmers Market this evening.  The nice weather is such a relief!  My sister will be getting a delicious bottle of Peach wine from Smith's Winery for a house-warming gift this weekend (I hope she doesn't read this or it won't be a surprise), my daughter is enjoying some lemonade flavored marshmallows, my son will be happy to see a fresh seedless watermelon in the fridge, and I'm not sure the baguette I purchased will even leave Shapiro's parking lot!  I've already ripped into it for dinner!

This is such an easy place to park and shop on your way home from work downtown.  Stop by and see what is being offered at the farmers market!  You won't be disappointed!

COLTS SEASON IS UPON US

Sunday, August 8, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

The first pre-season home Colts game is Sunday, August 15th at 1:00 p.m. vs the San Francisco 49er's.  Come to Shapiro's Deli before the game for the best parking deal around.  Just pay $20 to park and we will give you a $10 coupon off your meal, which is good for up to 3 days!  We have even more parking this year on the north west corner of Meridian and McCarty Streets.

Dress in your best Colts jersey and come try a world famous Reuben sandwich, Pastrami on Rye, or any of our other kosher style favorites.  Peppered beef is getting a lot of attention lately.  Have you ever tried our Chicken Salad?  Shapiro's is a great place to get your belly full before you head over to the Stadium.  Let's hope it's not 99 degrees outside with a heat index of "I think I'm going to die."

If you absolutely need to do some tailgaiting, try it with one of our boxed lunches.  $12.95 for a sandwich, chips, apple, pickle spear, gourmet cookie and a drink.  That is a great deal!

GO COLTS!  Hope we have another great football season!

CARMEL LUNCH SPECIAL

Tuesday, August 3, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Our Carmel lunch special for August is a Roasted or Smoked Turkey sandwich for only $5.  This offer is valid Monday through Friday, dine in only, excludes holidays, not valid with any other offer.  You can get a refreshing turkey sandwich on Shapiro's rye, white, wheat, sourdough, egg bun, Kaiser roll, or onion bun.  Croissants and bagels are also an option at an additional cost (but well worth it).

Don't forget we are right off the Monon Trail at our Carmel location.  Stop by for lunch or dinner while you are out enjoying the summer activities.  We have plenty of cold drinks!

IT'S NICE TO BE APPRECIATED

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
I went to a seminar yesterday on the south side of Indy.  There were maybe about 25 people in the class.  Instead of the obligatory name tags, the speaker decided it would be more informal for us to quickly introduce ourselves, where we worked, and our position with the company.  There were machinists, landscapers, manufacturers, health care workers, and the like.  When my co-worker and I introduced ourselves from Shapiro's Deli, there was an audible response in the room of happiness and recognition.  The speaker, from Dallas, was intrigued that everyone in the room seemed to know Shapiro's Deli!  Of course, we had to explain that we are one of the top 10 delis in the country and he should try to stop by before he heads out of town.  It is so nice to be appreciated!

THE BEST THING I EVER ATE

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
The Food Network has a show called The Best Thing I Ever Ate!  This show offers you food choices made by some of the food celebrities and chefs during their free time.  SHAPIRO'S DELI WILL BE FEATURED IN THEIR NEXT SEASON!!  Marc Summers, an Indianapolis native, is currently the host of Unwrapped, a popular Food Network show.  His choice for The Best Thing I Ever Ate! was the Peppered Beef Sandwich at Shapiro's Deli!

Marc Summers was here last Monday filming this episode for the Food Network.  We don't know the exact air date yet, but Season 3 ends in September and Shapiro's will be featured in Season 4.  We will let you know as soon as we get the exact date.  Marc was kind enough to let us take some pictures - he is incredibly nice.  Here he is with Brandy, our Purchasing Manager.

NEW SIZE, NEW PRICE

Sunday, July 18, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is adjusting the size of our large salads and our submarine sandwich.  Our popular Chef Salad, California Salad, and Salmon Salad will now be a slightly smaller portion for only $7.25.  Our submarine sandwich is now $8.95 and much more in keeping with a single serving size.  You might even be able to add on a piece of cheesecake or scrumptious pie for dessert!  Please let us know how you like the changes.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE BAKERY?

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

CHOCOLATE RUGULACH!  That's what is new!  We also have cinnamon, apricot and raspberry.  Rugulach is a Jewish pastry traditionally made in the form of a crescent by filling a triangle of dough around a filling.  If you would like to order a large quantity please call ahead and we will have it ready for you when you arrive.  It is delicious!

COME TO THE FARMERS MARKET

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Stop by the Stadium Village Farmers Market today from 4 to 7:30 in the parking lot across the street from the downtown deli.  There are about 25 vendors with fresh Indiana products, more being harvested each week.  I can personally vouch for many of them.  I've cooked some great corn on the cob, eaten a wonderful loaf of french bread (yes, I ate practically the whole loaf myself), drank a spectacular bottle of wine, and my daughter is excited about lemonade flavored marshmallows!  There are many samples available and it is great fun to meet the people who have grown or produced their own product.  You can find meat, dairy, oils, spices, pretzels, flowers, chocolates, wine, soaps, sauces, and produce.  Please stop by and check it out!!!

Of course we would love for you to stop in at the deli for dinner too!  We have our famous chicken stew on Tuesdays, along with all of our regular favorites.  If you want something for carry out, just call ahead and we will have it waiting for you when you are done shopping at the market.

WHAT'S IN SEASON?

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is staying on top of seasonal favorites.  You will have to stop by to see what we have on the serving line, but currently we are offering watermelon, peaches, beets, asparagus, fresh green beans and corn on the cob.

We order it fresh and cook it daily so stop by and see what we have to offer!

The Stadium Village Farmers Market is setting up every Tuesday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot across the street from Shapiro's Deli downtown.  Business has been very good.  You can get some of the best in locally grown foods from the vendors.  Stop by and see us too!  We'll be happy to feed you some kosher style favorites after your trip to the market.

DINING IN DOWNTOWN INDIANAPOLIS?

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
This photo below is a page from the March 2010 Indianapolis Monthly magazine, which I just noticed this afternoon.  Lo and behold, there is our serving line from the downtown Shapiro's Deli location for all to see!  Out in the dining room are photos of the original founders, Louis and Rebecca Shapiro (top center), Max Shapiro (left) who was one of their sons, and Morton Shapiro (bottom center), who is the (deceased) father of current owner, Brian Shapiro.

Several people have asked lately if we do breakfast.  OF COURSE WE DO!  We are open at 6:30 a.m. every day and have an express breakfast available at the Carmel deli during the week, with a full service breakfast menu on the weekends.  We have a full breakfast menu available at the Indianapolis deli every day.  You can order just about any type of eggs, beef bacon and sausage, biscuits and gravy, french toast, bagels and cream cheese, lox plates, and corned beef hash.  Join us for your next early morning breakfast meeting or family event.  Breakfast is available until 11 a.m.

OPEN FOURTH OF JULY

Saturday, June 19, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli will be open regular hours on Fourth of July.

Festivities in downtown Indianapolis include the Indianapolis Indians playing July 1-5, free admission to many venues including the Eiteljorg Museum, and the Freedom Blast fireworks display set off from the Regions Bank Tower at 9:45 p.m.  We will be open all day to offer you great food while you enjoy your day.  We also have great air conditioning, great parking, great desserts, cookies for the kids, and plenty of room for everybody!  We hope to see you at the downtown deli.

Festivities in Carmel, Indiana include the many activities offered by the Carmelfest festival.  They have changed things a bit this year.  The parade and fireworks display will be on July 5th.  The parade marches directly past our Carmel, Indiana deli.  Please stop by and have lunch with us after the parade.  Don't forget we now have the grill open out on the patio for the remainder of the summer.  Visit the Carmelfest website at www.carmelfest.net to get more details.

My favorite fourth of July was a few years ago when Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer stopped by the downtown deli unannounced.  (My children would say John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston..names in reverse order.)  I was star struck to say the least.  They were very nice and even let me get my picture taken with them.

Please put us in your plans for the day.  It should be a fun time in Indianapolis and Carmel.

Outdoor Grill at Shapiro's Carmel

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 by Brandy Ison

It's back!!!!  The outdoor patio section at Shapiro's Carmel is opening up this weekend.  If you didn't try out the grill menu last year, you have to come try it this summer.  It will be open Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm (weather permitting).  The special grill menu includes Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken Sandwiches, and Steak Sandwiches (cooked to order).  The best part... every item is under $8 and includes a bag of chips.  Potato salad and cole slaw (4oz.) can be added for an additional $1.75.  Make Shapiro's grill your favorite Carmel lunch spot.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET TO BUY A ???

Sunday, June 6, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Finish that sentence with your choice of products sold at the STADIUM VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET!  The first Tuesday market was a great success.  This week there will be even more vendors and the produce section will continue to grow as producers are able to harvest.  I personally sampled lavender and lemonade artisan marshmallows, the fruitiest wine I've ever had (and it was amazing), whipped cinnamon honey, and some spectacular milk chocolate.  Here are a few photos of the opening night.  The market will be open on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. right across the street from Shapiro's Deli on South Meridian Street in Indianapolis.  Of course, we'd like you to stop by the Deli and see why we've been the granddaddy of deli's in Indianapolis for over 100 years.

That is our pastry chef, John Poulsen, in the second photo (Smith Winery).  In the third photo is Ed and Teresa Stites (Artisano's).  Teresa is the market master for Stadium Village Farmer's Market.  See her if you have questions about being a vendor.

Keep on your excellent work on that! When I come over again - I´ll be going to SHAPIRO´S !!! Thank you! ;-) "

Wow!  Thanks for writing to us.  For the folks who don't know, we have Ann's Strawberry cheesecake, peanut butter, chocolate, plain, chocolate chip, oreo, blueberry, cherry, and a combination of plain/chocolate.  We also have a carrot cake/cheesecake combo and a devils food/cheesecake combo.  We use only the finest ingredients and bake them fresh every day.  They are available by the slice, half cakes or whole cakes.  The favorite at my house is the devils food/cheesecake combo.
