CORPORATE CATERING IS FUN

Friday, July 29, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
We had the good fortune to be one of several local restaurants serving food at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week.  In the photo is Kelly, Tracy (myself), Allison, and Jennifer, a portion of the catering staff of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel.  The event was the BRICKYARD BASH.  Thanks to all who stopped by and enjoyed a corned beef sandwich, delicious garlic pickle, and a gourmet cookie!  We had fun and hope we will get to meet more of the local corporate movers and shakers by bringing lunch or dinner to your next meeting or function.  Have a great Brickyard weekend and don't forget we are here to make boxed lunches, party trays, or whatever else you need for a fun racing weekend.brickyard bash

Friday, April 1, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
It is Women's NCAA Final Four weekend in Indianapolis!  Playing in their home state will be the NOTRE DAME IRISH taking on the Connecticut Huskies.  Games will be played at Conseco Fieldhouse, which is just minutes from Shapiro's Deli Downtown.  There are MANY, MANY other activities going on throughout the weekend before the championship game on Tuesday evening.

The  BUTLER BULLDOGS will be playing in Houston on Saturday and I'm sure there will be a hush in the city of Indianapolis as everyone watches this game.  My daughter happens to attend Butler and will be working at Shapiro's on Saturday - keeping one eye on the game.  We will definitely have the restaurant television tuned in to the Butler game!

Whether you are in Indy enjoying the Women's Final Four or relaxing at home to watch the Bulldogs, put Shapiro's Deli in your plans.  We are open and cooking lots of kosher style comfort food for you to nosh on.  Order a party tray and have a basketball party.  You just need to provide the big screen TV!  We will do the rest.

SHARING A STORY

Sunday, October 3, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
I received this e-mail from a lovely customer and asked her if we could post it on the blog.  She kindly said yes.  Feel free to send us your Shapiro's Deli memories too.  They are a pleasure to hear and we would love to share them.

My name is Kay Hinshaw and this is submitted in memory of Frances Jean Perdue Combs
         (1936-2007) Thank you.
I love getting your email newsletters.  I only had the pleasure of visiting your store back some 20 years ago.  My mother wanted to take us there as a "walk down memory lane" as we were adults.  Her touching story:  Let's see... 1950 something?  She was born in 1936. left a  small town in TN as a 17 year old on her own, got a job in Indianapolis, I think, in a factory, not sure.  But her story goes, she got a modest apartment down on the same corner and she would eat lunch there everyday, probably, something cheap.  She told me that in the corner of the restaurant, there was a woman who would set up and do manicures in like a booth to the side.   She said something about it being set up in the window.  Any way,  she worked hard and saved and finally was able to eat lunch on Friday's there at Shapiros and get her nails done also.  Random story ... I know. Love this story.   But I am someday going to bring my daughter to your deli.  Just wanted to share some history.  thank you.

Summer is nearly over, the kids are back to school, Labor Day has passed, and now it's time to re-focus on our jobs, careers, and daily activities.  Shapiro's Deli is here to help with your business catering needs and events.  We have a great variety of party trays that are easy to set up for your events.  Our morning pastry trays are very popular with bagels, Danish, croissants and all the fixings.  The Deal Maker Nosh Tray (our meat and cheese tray) can feed your group a hearty lunch and we throw in all the bread, paper goods, and sides.  We can also set up a great buffet of our old fashioned comfort food.  Meatloaf, baked chicken, stuffed cabbage...whatever makes you happy.  For those times when you need to have a little convenience, we package a wonderful boxed lunch that includes one of our famous deli sandwiches (corned beef or pastrami anyone?), a gourmet cookie, bag of chips, apple, pickle spear and a drink.

If you are looking for a restaurant in Indianapolis that delivers - call Shapiro's Deli.  We will bring the food to your door, set everything up and make sure you are well taken care of at your event or meeting.

A FUN WEEKEND AT SHAPIRO'S

Monday, April 5, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Sitting on break the other day I said to my table mates, "Hey, that looks like the Dalai Lama."  They scoffed and said "No way - he would have lots of security."  I replied, "But he has divine protection, I'm sure.  Why would he need more security than that?"  That was the end of that.   Well evidently he WAS here at Shapiro's!  Wish I had paid more attention.  These little moments are the interesting part of our days on the job.

We have had a fun, but very long, weekend and tonight is the night!  It's not too late to come in and get yourself set up with food from the best kosher style restaurant in Indianapolis. The Carmel, Indiana deli will also be open until 9:00 tonight.  Come on in and get stocked up on some deli favorites to munch on while you watch the NCAA Final Four game tonight.

GO BUTLER BULLDOGS!

WHO'S HAVING LUNCH IN DOWNTOWN INDIANAPOLIS?

Sunday, March 14, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
No doubt about it, working in a restaurant is hard work.  The hours are long, your body aches, and sometimes no matter how hard you try you just can't seem to make people happy.  And then there are days like today when you have the honor of meeting a person of distinction who treats you like gold and makes it all worthwhile.   Today the honor was ours as Mr. Gene Keady was in the Indianapolis deli for lunch.  Currently an analyst for the Big Ten Network, he is most notable for being the head basketball coach at Purdue University for 25 years, from 1980 to 2005.  He was most obliging when we asked for a photo.  That is me on the left and our manager, Cecilia, on the right.  I just happen to have a child who graduated from Purdue, so this is a big deal at my house.  You just never know who you may run into while having lunch at Shapiro's Deli!

WE ARE FULL OF BOLOGNA!...and SALAMI

Saturday, March 13, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Beginning today Shapiro's Deli will be offering Bologna and Salami Sandwiches at $4.95!!  This is a huge price break and it's not just a special....the boss changed the price! These are kosher-style meats that we offer every day along with our very popular pastrami, corned beef, and roast beef brisket.  Yes, there is also peppered beef, roasted and smoked turkey, rare roast beef, and some awesome beef franks.

We are looking forward to a very busy week here at Shapiro's Deli.  Along with our catering services, we are a very popular spot for St. Patrick's Day.  Even in the midst of Big Ten Basketball we are busy prepping for St. Patty's.  It's just a heartbeat away and then here comes more basketball with the NCAA Final Four Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium the first weekend in April.

If you are going to be in Carmel or Indianapolis and are looking for a kosher style restaurant, you MUST stop at Shapiro's Deli.  I spoke to a gentleman this morning who has been coming here for 63 years.  He still brings business associates here and I can't tell you how proud that makes us feel!  Thank you for your loyalty.

SHAPIRO'S DELI RECOGNIZED

Saturday, January 16, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

There is an award winning article about Shapiro's Delicatessen in the Fall 2009 issue of Traces of indiana and Midwestern History.  Written by Douglas Wissing and published by the Indiana Historial Society, this article is entitled "The Shapiro's Story".  An excerpt:  "Run by Russian immigrantss from Odessa, Louis and Rebecca Shapiro, the store also included some of the couple's eight children, who helped out with customers as the youngest ones were safely ensconced in the apartment above."  "Each morning for their customers' sensory delight, the Shapiros scattered aromatic spices on the grocery's wooden floors.  'It smelled so good', ninety eight year old Shapiro daughter Sylvia Gorfain remembered about her childhood in the store.  'People stood in line.'"  The entire story is told in a dozen pages with so much detail and depth with insight into the personal stories of the Shapiro family through the generations.

Another fantastic mention was received in the National Geographic Food Journeys of a Lifetime, 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe.  This is a beautiful book, as you would expect from National Geographic.  In the section titled Top Ten Travelers' Restaurants, Shapiro's Deli is given a nod as one of the places to visit in the Indianapolis International Airport.

Several years ago, USA TODAY named Shapiro's Deli as one of the TOP 10 DELIS IN AMERICA.

If you happen to be in Indianapolis you should stop by and see us!  Our deli in downtown Indianapolis or Carmel, Indiana are both easy to find.  Our kosher style food is nationally recognized!

Shapiro's Deli is in full swing as our loyal customers celebrate Chanukah and prepare for their Christmas celebrations.  Many families are gathering to share their time together over lunch or dinner at Shapiro's Deli.  We've seen plenty of flashes from cameras as family photos are taken.  Shapiro's offers a wide variety of kosher food choices to please everyone from the youngest toddler to grandma and grandpa.  Put Shapiro's in your holiday plans!

Once you have enjoyed a relaxing meal stop by our carryout counter and pick up your last minute gifts.  We are now offering gift cards which are re-loadable and do not expire.  There are also some sweet stocking stuffers, gourmet jellies and preserves, syrups, baking mixes, and specialty mustards.  While you are at the counter place your food order for the holidays.  Through the first of the year we are still offering our Complete Turkey Dinner for $59.99.  This is a great deal and will give you time to relax.

Stop by our restaurant in downtown Indianapolis or the Carmel, Indiana deli.  We are here to help you have a great holiday season!

SHAPIRO'S DELI AIRPORT

Thursday, August 13, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler
Did you know the best kosher style food in Indianapolis is also being served at the Indianapolis International Airport?  Of course it is Shapiro's Deli!  If you are a ticketed traveler, you can still get the best corned beef in Indianapolis.  Okay, you can also get pastrami, roast beef, turkey and kosher style franks!  Just go to Shapiro's, near Gate B15 to order your Shapiro's sandwich.  We also offer our famous macaroni and cheese.  It doesn't matter if your flight leaves from Concourse A.  Once you have passed through security you are free to visit the shops and restaurants on either Concourse A or B.  Take a comforting piece of home with you on the flight.
It's got to be better than "airline food".

DEDICATION SAYS SOMETHING

Friday, August 7, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler

Shapiro's employees are some of the most dedicated worker's I have ever seen.  I have personally been with Shapiro's for 13 years and that is nothing compared to some others.  I think local restaurants in Indianapolis experience quite a bit of turnover.  At our Indianapolis Deli and Carmel, Indiana Deli we have the great fortune of having employees with very long lengths of service.  Downtown we have Marybelle, who has been in our kitchen for over 50 years!  Her co-worker Earlene has served over 30 years!  Russell nearly 30 years.  Carl 20+ years, and Cecilia 20+ years.  In Carmel Ronda and Robert have been with Shapiro's 20+ years.  When the Indianapolis Deli had a fire a few years ago we had to shut down for 11 weeks.  We did not lose one employee during that time, and actually had employees in the restaurant every single day helping the construction crews with demolition and clean up.

Shapiro's customers are equally unsurpassed for their loyalty.  I can't tell you how many times one of our senior customers has told me that they have come to Shapiro's since they were a child.  They have brought their children and their children's children back time and time again.  They know the menu better than our newer employees.  They know the Shapiro ancestors that I never got a chance to meet.  They are part of the Shapiro tradition too.

Thanks to everyone for your dedicated service and patronage.  For over 100 years Shapiro's has been growing strong and we hope to continue that for many, many years to come.

EVERYBODY KNOWS RUSSELL

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler

If you've ever been to the Indianapolis Deli you surely have seen Russell in the front window cutting our meat every day.  Russell has been with Shapiro's for......ever it seems!  We found out today Russell is going to have some bypass surgery.  We wish him a successful operation and a quick recovery!  He has been working in the early, early morning for many years now.  No one can cut meat for our meat case like him.  He is hands down the best meat cutter in the restaurant.  If you ordered a party tray, Russell cut the meat.  If you had a catering order, Russell probably cut your meat.  If you came in for breakfast, you probably got a "Good Morning" from Russell.  If you came in to pick up bagels, Russell took care of you.  Everybody think good thoughts for Russell!  Hopefully he will be back in the front window of Shapiro's soon.

CATERING SERVICES

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler
Okay, I have no shame.  Have camera, will request a photo.  This is Andy Granatelli, also known as Mr. Indy 500, CEO of STP and all around racing legend!!  He is a gracious guest and we look forward to seeing him every year at race time.  He takes his guests to many of the best known Indianapolis local restaurants and we are proud to be one of them!

Which brings me to catering services.  Boxed lunches are a racing season staple here in Indianapolis.  You can get them all over town but no one has our famous Shapiro's Deli sandwiches.  Brickyard is approaching.  Call us to place an order.

"BRISKET"

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler
There are probably not too many restaurants in downtown Indianapolis that even use the word "brisket" on their menu.  You can learn a lot about Kosher Style Food and the history of Jewish Food at this Indianapolis deli.  "Brisket" is a cut of meat from the breast or lower chest.  While all meat animals have a brisket, the term is most often used to describe beef or veal.  The brisket is made up of two separate muscles which are sometimes separated for retail cutting:  the lean "first cut" and the fattier "second cut".

When you order brisket at Shapiro's you could be ordering corned beef brisket or roast beef brisket.  So don't be surprised if you order brisket and we ask you which kind....corned beef or roast beef?  Remember, it is just the cut.
