We love our customers because they always tell us how they feel!  Charles H. emailed me the other day and asked, "In my latest visit, I was told that you stopped making lemon meringue pie. Is this the end for that wonderful treat?"  (Used with permission)

My answer back to him made me realize that few people know the length of some of our business contacts.  We frequently hear about our customers that have been dining at our restaurant for 40, 50, even 70 years!  (We LOVE that!) But I bet our customers don't know that our relationships extend with the same kind of loyalty to our vendors.

Well, here is my answer to Charles about the Lemon meringue pie and you'll see what I mean.

"Dear Charles,  We have been buying ingredients for our Lemon Meringue pie from the same company for 80 years. They, like us, are a small, family owned business that make great products.  They were purchased by Unilever, a very large conglomerate that had a subsidy that made a cheaper, lower quality product.  Guess which one they decided to close and stop making?

We weren't happy with the cheaper version which is why we didn't use it to begin with.  We know that our customers expect quality and we would certainly hear about it if we tried to change.
I appreciate your inquiry and patronage to Shapiro's Delicatessen.  Thank you for taking the time to let me know your thoughts.  Please tell me if I am incorrect on our perception."
Charles told me that he would rather go without lemon meringue pie than have a sub-standard one.  That is one of the reasons they always eat at our restaurant and also brag to their friends about how good the food is, he says.  Our bakery in downtown Indianapolis tries to be consistent with our food as well as our food quality.  Sometimes, living up to a 40 year old memory of greatness is hard but we keep trying to get it right!  Thanks to everyone that keeps coming back throughout the years to eat at Shapiro's Delicatessen.
   RIP Lemon Meringue Pie

If you are looking for a little something to satisfy your sweet tooth, look no further!

Indianapolis and Carmel Shapiro's have always been known as your lunch spot but desserts (pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies) come first.  Literally!  Anyone that's been to Shapiro's deli line knows that we think dessert is just as important as your entree.  A Dessert Tray from Shapiro's is as equally impressive as our Meat and Cheese Trays.

Now ~ fresh from Michigan ~ Shapiro's Carmel has a fresh delivery of FUDGE for sampling!  Sally S flew her plane to Northern Michigan (tourists are nick-named "fudgies") to pick up a fresh batch of new fudge flavors as well as your old stand-by favorites.

Stop by the fudge table in Carmel after lunch or dinner and vote for your favorite flavor:

Chocolate, Chocolate Walnut, Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Vanilla Caramel, Belgian Dark Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt, Reese Cup, Snickers, Turtle Pecan, Vanilla Caramel Sea Salt, Cookies N Cream, Peanut Butter, or Orange Creamsicle Fudge.

About a month ago several of us at Shapiro's had the pleasure to meet Ted Allen, noted author and television personality.  He now is host of two prime-time series on Food Network: Chopped, a culinary competition in which four chefs per episode attempt to cook their way through three courses to win a $10,000 prize, and Food Detectives, which uses scientific experiments to test myths about food. He is a frequent guest on television cooking shows and the author of magazine articles and books.  All I can say is that he was so gracious to myself (on the right), Brandy Ison (far left) and Ronda Gude(second on left).  Ted grew up in Carmel, Indiana and attended Purdue University.  In town to do a photo shoot for Hamilton County, he definitely showed us some Hoosier hospitality!  We were fortunate to have our keylime pies in the photo with him.

Another "foodie" I was fortunate to meet was Marc Summers, who was also raised in Indiana.  Marc is an American television personality, comedian, game show host, producer, and a two-time talk show host. He is best known for hosting the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare and currently hosts Unwrapped on The Food Network.  He was in our downtown Indianapolis deli last week and was nice enough to let us get a photo.  Marc enjoys our peppered beef!  You never know who you might run into at Shapiro's Deli!  Thank you Marc Summers for your Hoosier hospitality!

We want to thank everyone for giving us an opportunity to serve your catering needs in Indianapolis and Carmel.  Our Marketing Manager, Jay Slavin, has been out to see many of you in your offices the last few weeks.  Thanks for your hospitality!  We are very excited to show you what we can do.  We are working diligently to serve our clients as they have breakfast meetings, work through lunch, and even stay into the evening hours and enjoy a Shapiro's dinner.  As the weather gets colder (prematurely I might add), more of you are trying our delicious soups and comforting dinners, such as meatloaf and baked chicken.  We are also quite busy with boxed lunches!  Thank you!  The boxed lunches can be a full or half size of our famous deli sandwiches, bag of chips, gourmet cookie, apple, pickle spear, and a soft drink or bottled water.  Yes we will deliver.  What time do you want it there?  The busy holiday season is approaching.  Please keep us in mind for your office get togethers.  Having a party tray from Shapiro's Deli along with some of our fresh baked cakes and pies will truly be a special treat.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.
