Congratulations to Jerry Donaldson of Greenfield, Indiana, who won a $50 gift card from Shapiro's Deli! Jerry is a member of our email club. He read in our May 2010 newsletter that we were accepting submissions from our email club members. Just tell us a memory of a Mother's Day that you spent at Shapiro's and tell us why is was special to you. Jerry wrote a very nice account of a Mother's Day that he remembered at Shapiro's and was awarded a $50 gift card! Below is Jerry's story:
"The story that comes to mind is when we as a family finally got her to go with us to eat out...she always preferred to stay home and cook for us at a get-together on Mom's day. She would always turn us down to take her out for that day. Finally, after hearing us talk about Shapiro's for years, she relented and allowed the 5 of us to go to lunch/dinner at the deli. I can remember what she had to eat, even after 22 years...she had liver and onions and mac and cheese, which she enjoyed to the fullest. It was the greatest day. The sad part of the story is it was the last Mother's Day we would spend together...she passed away 3 months later at the age of 72. Rest in Peace Mom."

MEATLOAF!! Freshly prepared from scratch every day and slowly baked to perfection. Shapiro's recipes date back to the early 1900's and we maintain that original goodness in everything we do. Sometimes we run out of meatloaf at midday because we sold all of our lunch portions and the dinner meatloaf's are in the oven. If you know you need a meatloaf dinner in the late afternoon just call ahead and we'll make sure to save a portion for you.
The same holds true for any menu item that you crave. Do you love the jalapeno bagels and need a dozen for the weekend? Just call ahead and we will make sure to have what you need.

The following is an e-mail we received yesterday. Please feel free to e-mail us anytime at deli@shapiros.com. Yes, we will take the good with the bad, but this is what makes us proud to serve you!! Thank you Mr. Smith for sending it in. No kidding, I am deleting his first name for privacy sake. Please come back and visit when you can!
"I'm so depressed. I saw the Food Network thing where Mark spotlighted your peppered beef sandwich. For my job I had to move to Mississippi. To say i miss Shapiros is not an understatement, it's more akin to missing a long lost loved one. I love Shapiros. I used to eat lunch there at least once a week. I would have eaten there every day, but it's not cheap you know, but it shouldn't be. Every time you eat at Shapiros it should be expensive and you should remember it. The meat is piled high, the meatloaf is better than any your mom ever made, the bread is crunchy and tender at the same time and when you pay the price it doesn't matter because you are too busy staring at your tray to worry about it at all. Shapiros is to lunch as Peyton Manning is to winning."
Stop by Shapiro's anytime and pick up a delicious Cheesecake for your special Valentine. We have Strawberry, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Cherry, Blueberry, Oreo, Chocolate Chip and Plain. You supply the champagne! We also have some special Valentine cookies and an abundance of other confections for you to choose from. Feel free to call ahead so we can have your order ready when you walk in the door.

As a new member of Weight Watchers, I just want to tell everyone that you CAN enjoy good food even when you are watching your weight. If you are looking for a place to nosh in Indianapolis, stop by Shapiro's Deli. There are plenty of options for those who are following the new Points Plus Weight Watcher program. We have lots of fresh fruit - which are now ZERO points! I have often enjoyed a 6 ounce chopped steak dinner with green beans, onions, and a side of fruit. This is a 10 point meal, which leaves plenty of room for the rest of your day if you are on the 29 minimum daily points. Our sandwiches are approximately 6 1/2 ounces of meat. Look up the points value in your Pocket Guide for the meat you choose. Feel free to order a sandwich with no bread if that works for you. Another favorite of mine is the made-from-scratch vegetable soup. One bowl is approximately 6 points. With two packets of Saltine crackers you only spend 8 points total on this filling and healthy meal. There are plenty of salads to choose from with fat-free dressing options. It costs me a few extra points, but I frequently have the Caesar salad with chicken for lunch. There is about 4 ounces of chicken, about 1/4 cup of swiss cheese, and a small amount of croutons. These all have point values in your Pocket Guide. If you are having breakfast we offer Egg Beaters or Egg Whites, which are a healthy alternative to whole eggs. It is a challenge to work at one of the best delis in Indianapolis, but thanks to the kosher style food choices I just have to make wise choices. I will leave the dessert choice up to you! You'll have to figure out whether or not you can fit this into your program. Good luck to everyone!
