Shapiro's Past & Present Owners

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Brandy Ison
I asked some of our employees to share memories about our past and current owners.  Shapiro's has been the place to get Kosher Style Food in Indianapolis for over 100 years.  Without these great leaders, Shapiro's would not be the great deli that it is today.

Max Shapiro
Max would come in and bake all of his own items around 3:30 or 4:30am.  He would work right there with you and would be here from sunrise to sunset.  He took care of all of his employees and would teach you anything you wanted.  He was a great person and is truly missed by everyone.

Mort Shapiro
Mort would come in with a cigar and stock market book in his hand.  He would sit at the front table, smoke his cigar, and watch all of the employees through the mirrors.  He would do anything for his employees.  He was definitely a business man.  He, too, was a great person and is truly missed by everyone.

Brian Shapiro- Current Owner
Brian is a very giving person.  He helps out employees and customers just like they are family.  His door is always open.  He is very educated, holding multiple degrees.  He is very concerned and involved with the youth.  He is a great inspiration to all of us.

Comments for Shapiro's Past & Present Owners

I remember Max Shapiro when I use to go to Shapiro's on a weekly basis with my grandfather. We always ordered the same thing, corned beef on rye with mustard and motza ball soup. Max would come over and sit and chat. As a child I use to look at Max and wonder why he was working every time we went in. He was older than my grandfather. Now that I am older I can come up with a few thoughts of why Max was working every time we went there. Dedication and love for what he was doing. My memories of Max are vague, but I remember a sort silver haired man with a big nose. He didn't seem to smile much, but friendly nevertheless. It would be nice to see photos of former owners.

In college, Brian Shapiro made straight A's. He used to take time out of his busy schedule to help me with my studies. I am grateful for his assistance.

They have the best butter bean soup and split pea soup i have ever eaten. we just ate there today aug 20 on our way home from the state fair. the food at shapiros is way better than fair food. we live in martinsville, but go to Shapiros pretty often. love it.
