If you are looking for a lunch spot in Carmel, look no further.  Shapiro's Deli is the place and in the month of March we will be offering our ROASTED OR SMOKED TURKEY SANDWICH FOR ONLY $5.  This offer is good Monday through Friday, dine-in only, not valid with any other offers or on holidays.

March is one of our busy months at Shapiro's.  Don't forget us on St. Patrick's Day.  You know we will have the best corned beef and cabbage in town.  But, more on that later.

See you at the Carmel deli for a great turkey sandwich!

LOOKING FOR JEWISH FOOD IN INDIANAPOLIS?

Saturday, February 27, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
We currently have Mandel Brot, which means "almond bread" and is actually a twice-baked cookie loved by Askenazi (Eastern European) Jews.  Similar to Italian biscotti, this is a delicious treat, but it is made with flour so it is not suitable during Passover.

We are also offering Hamentashen, which is traditionally eaten during the Jewish holiday of Purim.  Hamentashen is a three sided pastry, which we have filled with either apricot filling or poppyseed filling.  These are absolutely delicious.

Passover items have arrived!  The shelves are stocked with your Passover needs, both at the Indianapolis deli and the Carmel, Indiana deli.  Stop by and shop in our carryout department while we have everything you need.  Everything is on the shelves, so when it's gone, it's gone!

Stop by and see us downtown from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily, or in Carmel until 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Shapiro's Deli was fondly mentioned on the Dennis Miller radio show yesterday as David Sax, author of Save the Deli, was interviewed.  Dennis Miller said he would be in Indianapolis for the Final Four and wondered if there was a good deli.  David Sax told him about Shapiro's.  Copy and paste this link  into your web browser and listen to the short interview.  Hey Dennis, we'll be waiting to serve you here in Indy!

KOSHER STYLE FOOD OFFERED FROM INDIANAPOLIS

Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

We found out today that Indiana Congressman Andre Carson has a friendly arrangement made with Congressman Steve Scalise from New Orleans for the upcoming game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.  Seems if the Saints lose the game, Congressman Carson's Washington D.C. staff will be receiving some alligator sausage and blackened redfish from the Louisiana region.  If the Colts lose (I can barely type those words) Congressman Scalise and his D.C. staff will be receiving some famous Reuben sandwiches from Shapiro's Deli and some sweets from Long's Bakery.  We are proud that the best kosher style food served in Indianapolis will be enjoyed by folks from New Orleans - if, and that is a HUGE "IF" - the Saints are victorious.  I say fat chance.  Enjoy your alligator sausage Congressman Carson.  When you come home to Indy please stop by Shapiro's for your Reuben! GO COLTS!

NEW YORK IN INDY

Saturday, January 23, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

Shapiro's has gotten a lot of attention this week from New York.  Check out some of these news stories.  Copy and paste the link into your browser and see how a few New Yorker's are enjoying Indianapolis.  Thanks to Matthew Lysiak of the N.Y. Daily News and Jamie Roth of ABC in New York.  Hope to see you all again before the weekend is over.  Maybe you could even pick up a Colts jersey at Lucas Oil Stadium to take home with you.  It is sure to be a popular item as we gear up for our Super Bowl win!

SHAPIRO'S DELI RECOGNIZED

Saturday, January 16, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

There is an award winning article about Shapiro's Delicatessen in the Fall 2009 issue of Traces of indiana and Midwestern History.  Written by Douglas Wissing and published by the Indiana Historial Society, this article is entitled "The Shapiro's Story".  An excerpt:  "Run by Russian immigrantss from Odessa, Louis and Rebecca Shapiro, the store also included some of the couple's eight children, who helped out with customers as the youngest ones were safely ensconced in the apartment above."  "Each morning for their customers' sensory delight, the Shapiros scattered aromatic spices on the grocery's wooden floors.  'It smelled so good', ninety eight year old Shapiro daughter Sylvia Gorfain remembered about her childhood in the store.  'People stood in line.'"  The entire story is told in a dozen pages with so much detail and depth with insight into the personal stories of the Shapiro family through the generations.

Another fantastic mention was received in the National Geographic Food Journeys of a Lifetime, 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe.  This is a beautiful book, as you would expect from National Geographic.  In the section titled Top Ten Travelers' Restaurants, Shapiro's Deli is given a nod as one of the places to visit in the Indianapolis International Airport.

Several years ago, USA TODAY named Shapiro's Deli as one of the TOP 10 DELIS IN AMERICA.

If you happen to be in Indianapolis you should stop by and see us!  Our deli in downtown Indianapolis or Carmel, Indiana are both easy to find.  Our kosher style food is nationally recognized!

Shapiro's Deli will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  You can still enjoy your favorites from Shapiro's in Indianapolis or Carmel, Indiana if you pick up your goodies on Wednesday.  The cooks and bakers are already busy (just like the elves in Santa's workshop) preparing your annual favorites.  In addition to our Complete Turkey Dinner, we are wildly popular at Thanksgiving time for our baked goods.  We have a huge variety of pies, including traditional pumpkin pie.  Go to the Pastries & Desserts section of our website, www.shapiros.com to check out a full listing of pies and cakes.  Pre-ordering is recommended.  We can do a lot with 24 hours notice!  We are thankful as a company for our loyal customers who make us a part of their annual Thanksgiving tradition.  Enjoy the day!  We will be open again at 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning cooking up our kosher style food for your shopping weekend.

"FOODIES" IN INDIANAPOLIS AND CARMEL

Sunday, November 15, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler
About a month ago several of us at Shapiro's had the pleasure to meet Ted Allen, noted author and television personality.  He now is host of two prime-time series on Food Network: Chopped, a culinary competition in which four chefs per episode attempt to cook their way through three courses to win a $10,000 prize, and Food Detectives, which uses scientific experiments to test myths about food. He is a frequent guest on television cooking shows and the author of magazine articles and books.  All I can say is that he was so gracious to myself (on the right), Brandy Ison (far left) and Ronda Gude(second on left).  Ted grew up in Carmel, Indiana and attended Purdue University.  In town to do a photo shoot for Hamilton County, he definitely showed us some Hoosier hospitality!  We were fortunate to have our keylime pies in the photo with him.

Another "foodie" I was fortunate to meet was Marc Summers, who was also raised in Indiana.  Marc is an American television personality, comedian, game show host, producer, and a two-time talk show host. He is best known for hosting the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare and currently hosts Unwrapped on The Food Network.  He was in our downtown Indianapolis deli last week and was nice enough to let us get a photo.  Marc enjoys our peppered beef!  You never know who you might run into at Shapiro's Deli!  Thank you Marc Summers for your Hoosier hospitality!

CATERING IS GETTING BUSY!

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 by Tracy Fiddler

We want to thank everyone for giving us an opportunity to serve your catering needs in Indianapolis and Carmel.  Our Marketing Manager, Jay Slavin, has been out to see many of you in your offices the last few weeks.  Thanks for your hospitality!  We are very excited to show you what we can do.  We are working diligently to serve our clients as they have breakfast meetings, work through lunch, and even stay into the evening hours and enjoy a Shapiro's dinner.  As the weather gets colder (prematurely I might add), more of you are trying our delicious soups and comforting dinners, such as meatloaf and baked chicken.  We are also quite busy with boxed lunches!  Thank you!  The boxed lunches can be a full or half size of our famous deli sandwiches, bag of chips, gourmet cookie, apple, pickle spear, and a soft drink or bottled water.  Yes we will deliver.  What time do you want it there?  The busy holiday season is approaching.  Please keep us in mind for your office get togethers.  Having a party tray from Shapiro's Deli along with some of our fresh baked cakes and pies will truly be a special treat.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.
