SWIMMERS & SHRINERS TAKE OVER INDIANAPOLIS

Indianapolis is a great town for conventions!  We are lucky enough to have a large convention center in Indy and our next group to hit the town is 15 thousand Shriners!  They have already tweeted to me that they are coming!  

If you spot a Shriner walking about town, tweet #spotaShriner to let them know you see them!  

All 15 thousand are welcome at Shapiro's downtown Indy for one of our huge corned beef sandwiches or Fried Chicken dinners, but maybe you shouldn't all come at once!  

The Natatorium is packed with swimmer this week as well.  The 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials are being held at IUPUI through this weekend.  We are host to a couple of Olympic medal winners as well as Olympic hopefuls on their way to the World Trials.  

If you are in town for a family visit or a convention, make a stop by an Indiana lengendary restaurant.  Shapiro's has been serving hungry customers for 108 years!  We are an old-world delicatessen that has become an institution.

GOOD~BYE TO CARMEL

Saying so-long to Carmel is not going to be easy.  After 12 years of trying to make ends meet, Shapiro's Delicatessen in Carmel is closing the doors on Father's Day, Sunday June 16, 2013.  

Shapiro's Delicatessen was the first business to break ground in the city center in December of 2001. Carmel's strict design code set the stage for the buildings blueprints and we opened in June of 2002 to great expectations and hope. The post 9/11 era changed our world and economy.  It took 7 years for the Palladium to open and as City Council Woman Luci Snyder stated, "it had become more formal than a pastrami sandwich".  Much of the retail development that was discussed to go into the area went to Clay Terrace instead and there is still space available for development 13 years after we broke ground.  

There are plenty of bars and pubs that are very successful in Carmel and the city center area.  Family style dining just isn't what works.  Lesson learned - call the baby sitter and enjoy your night out on the town!  Carmel has a lot to offer ~ it just didn't work for us.  

We have the most amazing customers and employees and Brian and I would like to thank all of you! You are the reason why we fought to stay open when we first discussed closing 3 years ago.  Thank you for your support.  Thank you for your patronage and kindness.  Thank you to our staff that worked tirelessly for so many hours after hours.  

Visit our downtown Indianapolis restaurant for your corned beef or pastrami fix!  Grab a sandwich at the airport before your next flight - Shapiro's airport is located near B14, but you can get to it no matter what your gate.  

Oh yeah...HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!  

GOING TO GUCI CAMP? DON'T FORGET TO BRING A COOLER FOR SHAPIRO'S

Are your kids coming to Zionsville for camp this summer?  As you pack the car to bring them to Goldman Union Camp Institute, don't forget to pack a cooler for yourself!  Before you drop them off for the summer (or a couple of weeks) bring them to Shapiro's Delicatesseen for a great meal.  While you are noshing your final meal together, order yourself a couple of pounds of corned beef, beef tongue, pastrami and rye bread to take home with you!  You can always ask us for a bag of ice for the cooler.  You can always get a To-Go sandwich for the road, too.  Carry out brisket on rye is SO much better than the drive thru options you'll encounter on the road!  

Don't forget to check out the pastry case for your sweet tooth!  It is, after all, a long drive home!  A few cookies or ruglach will be just what you needed a couple of hours out the door!  Did you know that our bagels freeze really well?  Place them into a zip lock type bag when you get home and freeze them for later.  Our coconut macaroons freeze really well as well!

The Indy A-List is having a pie bracket contest for the best sugar cream pie in central Indiana.  Shapiro's Delicatessen needs your vote!  

You can literally vote every day!  Like the joke about voting in Chicago - Vote early and Vote OFTEN - once you vote, it will be easy to vote again!  

Please help Shapiro's Bakery stay in the publics eye as one of the few restaurants that still makes everything fresh, from scratch, start to finish!  Never frozen chickens that we cook for our chicken salad.  Whole briskets from Vienna Beef that we season, cook, slice to order in house for each corned beef, brisket and peppered beef sandwich!  Pastrami from Brooklyn that we season, cook, slice to order in house for each pastrami sandwich!  Potato salad that we've actually peeled the potatoes and chopped the celery and onions!  Don't even get me started on what they do in the bakery!!!  You should see the size of some of our mixers!  We have all sizes from small batch to cheesecake!    

Nobody does FROM SCRATCH like Shapiro's Delicatessen!

Kent L. wrote a review on Yelp about his dining experience in downtown Indianapolis eating a sandwich at Shapiro's Delicatessen.   Thanks Kent L.!

From the outside of the red brick Downtown location, it doesn't look like a Jewish delicatessen but go inside to this cafeteria-style layout, get a gander at the many tempting foods at the glass-enclosed counter displays and you know immediately that you're in for the real deal. I like my sandwiches either with rye bread or on onion rolls but the day I visited, it was pastrami on rye with mustard with a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda and it was just a perfect combination. Pastrami that's too lean is dry and lacks flavor, whereas too much fat makes the sandwich oily and Shapiro's pastrami strikes the perfect balance of meat-to-fat ratio. While Shapiro's does have a wide variety of dessert choices, who has room after one of their sandwiches? The corned beef also looked really good but that will have to wait for another trip. The menu prices were quite reasonable for both the quality and quantity of food, which would be several dollars more in places like NYC or L.A. delicatessen and since it looks like many Jewish delicatessens around the country are closing after many years in business, it becomes harder to find one to dine in. I would wholeheartedly return here.

“Landmark Indy Deli”

NYC, Chicago-all your big cities have 'em-Landmark Eateries-places you cannot visit the Big City without dining there. Shapiro's Deli is one of Indianapolis' Landmarks. Decor is strait out of the 1950's & the food is fabulous! Everything I have ever had here is great-corned beef & cabbage is the best. I am not normally a bread or desert eater-but this place is the exception-all bread baked fresh in house & the cheesecake is downright sinful! Always a big crowd at lunchtime through the week-If you desire a more relaxed atmosphere I would suggest evenings or weekends(although the Sunday after church crowd can be hectic). I have been coming here since I was a kid and have never left hungry or disappointed.

NORMA RACES FOR A CURE

Saturday April 21st is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Indianapolis.

The race starts Saturday morning from Military Park.  This is the 21st Anniversary of the race in central Indiana!  

One of Shapiro's employees, Norma, is a breast cancer survivor and will be proudly participating  again this year.  She walks in support of the cause that saved her life.  You may know Norma as the best breakfast cook downtown!  Her regular customers always leave comment cards about how much they love her!  (Thanks Norma - you are a wonderful friend and we're glad you're with us!)  

Shapiro's Downtown is open at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast this and every Saturday.  We have eggs made to order, french toast, corned beef hash, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and so much more.  Stop by after the race.  It should be a great event day in Indianapolis!

Happy New Year to everyone!  2012 has arrived and we are looking forward to serving you the best deli fare in the coming year.  We are serving Corned Beef and Cabbage today, along with black eyed peas to get your new year off to a "lucky" start.  Shapiro's is open until 7 p.m. today.  It is just a few short weeks to the most unique experience to ever visit our city - the Super Bowl!  You will NOT have properly visited Indianapolis unless you stop by Shapiro's Deli for the best corned beef, pastrami, bakery goods, Jewish deli delights, and kosher-style goodness.  Stay tuned for our event schedule.  We are likely to have very extended hours so everyone has a chance to experience just why Shapiro's Deli has been family owned and operated for over 100 years!

Shapiro's Deli is proud to be one of the TOP TEN DELIS IN THE COUNTRY according to USA TODAY.  This is the place to go if you are looking for well known Jewish style food.  Start with our one-of-a-kind corned beef, cooked early every morning in a huge kettle until it is just right.  Servers hand trim the meat and it is sliced for you as you order.  Pair this with our warm Shapiro rye bread, hand sliced.  Potato pancakes (latkes) make a perfect side dish.  Some people like them with applesauce, some with sour cream, and some with nothing at all.  You might also want to try our cabbage borscht or matzo ball soup.  The mazto balls are made from scratch and are everything you would ever want in a matzo ball!  How about a chopped liver sandwich?  It is quite popular on rye bread with a slice of onion.  Step over to the bakery counter and sample the Rugulach.  This hand-made pastry is available in apricot, raspberry, chocolate and cinnamon.  Most folks order a variety because they are all so delicious!  If you are looking for the best place to nosh, look no further than Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana.

Every business in Indianapolis and the surrounding area is gearing up for Super Bowl 2012...and if they are not, they should be!  We are studying our Indiana history, learning about amenities available in our city, and trying to figure out how everything is going to come together!  
icva The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association is a great source of information.  Their Fall 2011/Winter 2012 Visitor Guide is packed with information!  We are not too shy to mention that Shapiro's Deli is recommended on page 14 as one of the places you "Can't Leave Town Without..."  Shapiro's Corned Beef Sandwich is touted as a "mile high stack of tender thin-sliced corned beef.  Don't even think of asking for it on anything but the fresh-baked rye."  We will be sure to wish you A SUPER DAY when you come to visit us in Indy!

We had the good fortune to be one of several local restaurants serving food at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week.  In the photo is Kelly, Tracy (myself), Allison, and Jennifer, a portion of the catering staff of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel.  The event was the BRICKYARD BASH.  Thanks to all who stopped by and enjoyed a corned beef sandwich, delicious garlic pickle, and a gourmet cookie!  We had fun and hope we will get to meet more of the local corporate movers and shakers by bringing lunch or dinner to your next meeting or function.  Have a great Brickyard weekend and don't forget we are here to make boxed lunches, party trays, or whatever else you need for a fun racing weekend.brickyard bash 

STADIUM VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET

I have never professed to be a photographer, but here are a few photos from the market tonight.  These are local folks, growing and producing local products.  A few of the vendors are setting up monthly and some weekly.  Be sure to ask about your favorites.  My dog, Zoey, is waiting for the doggie treats which will return next Tuesday night.  Last week I got a bottle of Calypso wine from my favorite wine maker, Dave Smith of Smith's Winery.  I will be sharing that with my sister in St. Louis when I visit in a few weeks.  There was a close call a few weeks ago, when I almost developed a granola addiction!  Stop by, shop, and then come to Shapiro's for a $5 Corned Beef Sandwich, which is our Tuesday night dine-in special in honor of the Stadium Village Farmers Market.  More local produce will be appearing as we get into the growing season.  Stay tuned!

RACE DAY HOURS

Shapiro's Deli is open at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings and we will be here to get you ready for the race.  Order your race day carryout items and then sit down for a great breakfast!  Bagels, lox, cream cheese, or eggs any way you want them.  We serve beef bacon, turkey bacon, corned beef hash, turkey hash, biscuits and gravy and a variety of omelets.  Our Carmel location has even more breakfast specialties, such as Banana Stuffed French Toast, Chicken and Egg Frittata, or Salmon Eggs Benedict.  

We will be here after the race too!  We close at 8:00 on Sunday night at both locations.  Have a great dinner at Indy's premier delicatessen - Shapiro's Deli, serving Indianapolis since 1905!

STADIUM VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET is back this Tuesday night from 4 to 7 p.m. and will run every Tuesday from May 17th to September 27th.  Let's hope for some super Tuesday afternoon weather!  In conjunction with the Farmers Market, Shapiro's Deli is offering a $5 CORNED BEEF SANDWICH  every Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. for our dine-in customers at the downtown location only.  That is one heck of a deal!!  To get things started in fine fashion, everyone in attendance may enter to win a pair of .5 CTW Diamond Solitaire Earrings from Goldman Jewelers!! It just keeps getting better!
