KOSHER STYLE JEWISH FOOD IN INDIANAPOLIS

Saturday, December 10, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is proud to be one of the TOP TEN DELIS IN THE COUNTRY according to USA TODAY.  This is the place to go if you are looking for well known Jewish style food.  Start with our one-of-a-kind corned beef, cooked early every morning in a huge kettle until it is just right.  Servers hand trim the meat and it is sliced for you as you order.  Pair this with our warm Shapiro rye bread, hand sliced.  Potato pancakes (latkes) make a perfect side dish.  Some people like them with applesauce, some with sour cream, and some with nothing at all.  You might also want to try our cabbage borscht or matzo ball soup.  The mazto balls are made from scratch and are everything you would ever want in a matzo ball!  How about a chopped liver sandwich?  It is quite popular on rye bread with a slice of onion.  Step over to the bakery counter and sample the Rugulach.  This hand-made pastry is available in apricot, raspberry, chocolate and cinnamon.  Most folks order a variety because they are all so delicious!  If you are looking for the best place to nosh, look no further than Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana.

WE ARE FAMILY

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is family owned and operated since 1905.  Brian Shapiro is the fourth generation and current owner of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Shapiro's Deli in Carmel, Indiana.  The delicious offerings on the menu have been handed down from past generations, who arrived in the United States from Odessa, Russia at the turn of the century.  Lots of things have changed in this world.  The economy makes running a business more difficult every day, but the best things in life are produced by the hard working family owned businesses in this country and Shapiro's Deli is proud to be among them.  In addition to the Shapiro family heritage we have generations of employees working too.  Wives, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins, you name it - we have it!  Yes, Shapiro's Deli is family owned and proudly teaching our future generations the value of good food, hard work, and how to nosh with the best of them! We celebrate our staff this holiday season!

SAY HELLO TO PORTIA AND MARK

Friday, November 18, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
portia and mark Say "Hello" to two of our managers at Shapiro's Deli!  Portia has been working at the deli in downtown Indianapolis for 4 years.  After working in many different departments, primarily as cashier, she was recently promoted to manager.  Portia is great to work with and always takes great care of her customers.  Mark has been with Shapiro's for 3 years and does double duty by managing at two locations - downtown and in Carmel, Indiana.  Mark is known for going the extra mile.  He also has a keen knowledge of the city and its' landmarks, which is very helpful for our out-of-state visitors.  As you can tell, they are both a bit camera shy.  Say "Hello" next time you see them!

Every business in Indianapolis and the surrounding area is gearing up for Super Bowl 2012...and if they are not, they should be!  We are studying our Indiana history, learning about amenities available in our city, and trying to figure out how everything is going to come together!
icva The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association is a great source of information.  Their Fall 2011/Winter 2012 Visitor Guide is packed with information!  We are not too shy to mention that Shapiro's Deli is recommended on page 14 as one of the places you "Can't Leave Town Without..."  Shapiro's Corned Beef Sandwich is touted as a "mile high stack of tender thin-sliced corned beef.  Don't even think of asking for it on anything but the fresh-baked rye."  We will be sure to wish you A SUPER DAY when you come to visit us in Indy!

CORPORATE CATERING IS FUN

Friday, July 29, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
We had the good fortune to be one of several local restaurants serving food at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week.  In the photo is Kelly, Tracy (myself), Allison, and Jennifer, a portion of the catering staff of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel.  The event was the BRICKYARD BASH.  Thanks to all who stopped by and enjoyed a corned beef sandwich, delicious garlic pickle, and a gourmet cookie!  We had fun and hope we will get to meet more of the local corporate movers and shakers by bringing lunch or dinner to your next meeting or function.  Have a great Brickyard weekend and don't forget we are here to make boxed lunches, party trays, or whatever else you need for a fun racing weekend.brickyard bash

MEET CARL AND LAURA

Saturday, June 25, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
carl and lauraOn the left is Carl, a manager who has worked at Shapiro's Deli for 23 years.  He started as a busser, worked 9 years in the kitchen, and knows just about everything there is to know about the food, the building, the equipment, and the customers!  Carl is from Jackson, Kentucky, a good old boy who has more energy than most of the "young folks".  Carl NEVER misses a day of work and in fact, he comes in on holidays to make sure that none of our equipment takes a day off.  Most weekdays you will see Carl working the meat slicer, calling "young man" and "young lady" to everyone in line.

On the right is Laura, who happens to be my lovely daughter.  She has worked at Shapiro's Deli downtown and in the Carmel deli for the last 6 years.  She is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology at Butler University and will be a senior in the coming academic year.  Laura is pretty quiet but super efficient.  She works part time in our office, along with serving customers as a Deli Clerk and prep person in our "salad" department.  Carl has known her since she was 6 years old!  We call him "uncle Carl" at my house and Laura has learned a lot from him.  They really work great together.

Hey, did you see those yummy cakes in the display case behind them?  You won't find any better cheesecakes in Indianapolis!  Come in for a cake and be sure to say "Hi" to Carl and Laura!

A BIRDS EYE VIEW

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
This is a great photo taken by Sally Shapiro, showing the beginning of the serving line at our downtown deli.  It is a great view and represents the efforts of the bakers working throughout the night, along with the morning staff who comes in at 5:30 to begin preparations for the day.  Pots will be boiling in the kitchen with soups, meats, vegetables, and noodles; lettuce will be crisping in the sink; fruit will be washed and hand cut; cakes will be frosted; cheesecakes will be topped with whipped cream; rye bread will be baking; and the garlic dill pickles will be cut into spears before some of you have left your house in the morning.  This serving line will be emptied and filled many times in its 13 1/2 hour shift!  The dishes will be washed and sanitized many, many times throughout the day and evening.  The closing manager will put the restaurant "to bed" at night and then we will begin the process again each morning 363 days a year.  Thanks for coming to our house!  Please stop by again soon!
