I just spent a good deal of time at the Stadium Village Farmers Market this evening. The nice weather is such a relief! My sister will be getting a delicious bottle of Peach wine from Smith's Winery for a house-warming gift this weekend (I hope she doesn't read this or it won't be a surprise), my daughter is enjoying some lemonade flavored marshmallows, my son will be happy to see a fresh seedless watermelon in the fridge, and I'm not sure the baguette I purchased will even leave Shapiro's parking lot! I've already ripped into it for dinner!
This is such an easy place to park and shop on your way home from work downtown. Stop by and see what is being offered at the farmers market! You won't be disappointed!
Calling all race fans! Shapiro's Deli has a great boxed lunch available for your day at the track. You can get a full sized deli sandwich, bag of chips, gourmet cookie, an apple, pickle spear and a drink for $12.95.
Call ahead for large quantities or stop by and can make smaller orders as you wait. Available at our downtown or Carmel location anytime. You can order any of our deli sandwiches or a Reuben for an additional $2.
The Food Network has a show called
The Best Thing I Ever Ate! This show offers you food choices made by some of the food celebrities and chefs during their free time. SHAPIRO'S DELI WILL BE FEATURED IN THEIR NEXT SEASON!! Marc Summers, an Indianapolis native, is currently the host of
Unwrapped, a popular Food Network show. His choice for
The Best Thing I Ever Ate! was the Peppered Beef Sandwich at Shapiro's Deli!
Marc Summers was here last Monday filming this episode for the Food Network. We don't know the exact air date yet, but Season 3 ends in September and Shapiro's will be featured in Season 4. We will let you know as soon as we get the exact date. Marc was kind enough to let us take some pictures - he is incredibly nice. Here he is with Brandy, our Purchasing Manager.

Stop by the Stadium Village Farmers Market today from 4 to 7:30 in the parking lot across the street from the downtown deli. There are about 25 vendors with fresh Indiana products, more being harvested each week. I can personally vouch for many of them. I've cooked some great corn on the cob, eaten a wonderful loaf of french bread (yes, I ate practically the whole loaf myself), drank a spectacular bottle of wine, and my daughter is excited about lemonade flavored marshmallows! There are many samples available and it is great fun to meet the people who have grown or produced their own product. You can find meat, dairy, oils, spices, pretzels, flowers, chocolates, wine, soaps, sauces, and produce. Please stop by and check it out!!!
Of course we would love for you to stop in at the deli for dinner too! We have our famous chicken stew on Tuesdays, along with all of our regular favorites. If you want something for carry out, just call ahead and we will have it waiting for you when you are done shopping at the market.
Shapiro's Deli is staying on top of seasonal favorites. You will have to stop by to see what we have on the serving line, but currently we are offering watermelon, peaches, beets, asparagus, fresh green beans and corn on the cob.
We order it fresh and cook it daily so stop by and see what we have to offer!
The Stadium Village Farmers Market is setting up every Tuesday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot across the street from Shapiro's Deli downtown. Business has been very good. This photo below is a page from the March 2010
Indianapolis Monthly magazine, which I just noticed this afternoon. Lo and behold, there is our serving line from the downtown Shapiro's Deli location for all to see! Out in the dining room are photos of the original founders, Louis and Rebecca Shapiro (top center), Max Shapiro (left) who was one of their sons, and Morton Shapiro (bottom center), who is the (deceased) father of current owner, Brian Shapiro.

My favorite fourth of July was a few years ago when Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer stopped by the downtown deli unannounced. (My children would say John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston..names in reverse order.) I was star struck to say the least. They were very nice and even let me get my picture taken with them.
Please put us in your plans for the day. It should be a fun time in Indianapolis and Carmel.

As excerpted from TRACES Magazine, Fall 2009, The Shapiro's Story, by Douglas Wissing.....
"The Shapiro's were soon in Indianapolis. With the five hundred dollars they'd brought from Odessa, the Shapiros opened a small store. But the little business could not provide a living for the family, so while Rebecca ran the grocery, Louis took work at the downtown Star Store, where a falling box injured his throat. The worst was yet to come. During his medical treatment, the doctors discovered Louis was suffering with tuberculosis, which required months-long treatment at the National Jewish Hospital for Consumptives in Denver."
"My mother had to support six kids," Sylvia recounted. "She had a wagon, and she went door to door selling pound bags of ground coffee." Rebecca bought freshly ground coffee from a south side wholesale roaster, hauling her goods to her customers with a pushcart. "She had such a big clientele, when my father came back to Indianapolis, he immediately bought a horse and wagon," noted Sylvia. An early picture shows the properly dressed Louis with his oldest daughter, Fanny, beside him in the wagon with a handsome gray in the traces. The elegant lettering on the wagon read, "Teas and Coffees. L. Shpiro. 1032 S Illinois St. 9965 both phones."
In 1912 the Indianapolis City Directory recorded a big move: It listed "Shapiro, Louis, grocer 808 S Meridian," a location that has remained Shapiro's to this day."
We are very proud to be a part of this history at Shapiro's. Take a look at our photos in the dining room the next time you find yourself dining in downtown Indianapolis. They are the real deal!

We have Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting! The chocolate cupcakes are delicious too! Unfortunately, I can give you first hand knowledge that the bakery treats created at Shapiro's Delicatessen are some of the finest in the city. I have the gym membership to prove it. Keep us in mind when you are planning your graduation parties and other get togethers as we head into some very nice weather. You relax and let us take care of the goodies. Whether you are looking for kosher style food or the finest in bakery products, Shapiro's Delicatessen is the place to call. Stop by the downtown Indianapolis deli or the Carmel, Indiana deli when you are out and about the city.
