CATERING TO YOUR SWEET TOOTH

Thursday, April 19, 2012 by Sally Shapiro

If you are looking for a little something to satisfy your sweet tooth, look no further!

Indianapolis and Carmel Shapiro's have always been known as your lunch spot but desserts (pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies) come first.  Literally!  Anyone that's been to Shapiro's deli line knows that we think dessert is just as important as your entree.  A Dessert Tray from Shapiro's is as equally impressive as our Meat and Cheese Trays.

Now ~ fresh from Michigan ~ Shapiro's Carmel has a fresh delivery of FUDGE for sampling!  Sally S flew her plane to Northern Michigan (tourists are nick-named "fudgies") to pick up a fresh batch of new fudge flavors as well as your old stand-by favorites.

Stop by the fudge table in Carmel after lunch or dinner and vote for your favorite flavor:

Chocolate, Chocolate Walnut, Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Vanilla Caramel, Belgian Dark Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt, Reese Cup, Snickers, Turtle Pecan, Vanilla Caramel Sea Salt, Cookies N Cream, Peanut Butter, or Orange Creamsicle Fudge.

NORMA RACES FOR A CURE

Thursday, April 19, 2012 by Sally Shapiro

Saturday April 21st is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Indianapolis.

The race starts Saturday morning from Military Park.  This is the 21st Anniversary of the race in central Indiana!

One of Shapiro's employees, Norma, is a breast cancer survivor and will be proudly participating  again this year.  She walks in support of the cause that saved her life.  You may know Norma as the best breakfast cook downtown!  Her regular customers always leave comment cards about how much they love her!  (Thanks Norma - you are a wonderful friend and we're glad you're with us!)

Shapiro's Downtown is open at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast this and every Saturday.  We have eggs made to order, french toast, corned beef hash, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and so much more.  Stop by after the race.  It should be a great event day in Indianapolis!

Bagels You Can Be Proud Of

Sunday, March 18, 2012 by Sally Shapiro

Did you know that we make our Bagels in our Indianapolis bakery?  We sent our baker to train back east and to learn how to make H & H Bagels, a staple in the NY noshing world.  They are made fresh every day in a huge variety of flavors - featuring a Green Bagel for St. Patrick's Day last week.  On average, we make 12,000 bagels every week!

Plain Bagel, Poppy Seed Bagel, Sesame Seed Bagel, All Seed Bagel = Everything Bagel, Garlic Bagel, Onion Bagel, Cinnamon Raisin Bagel, Blueberry Bagel, Pumpernickle Bagel, Rye Bagel ~ what have I forgetten?

Shapiro's Pastry Trays include our bagels created in our bakery, downtown Indianapolis.  If you have a catering need, whether it's Corporate or personal, in Indianapolis or Carmel, we'll deliver a delicious and beautiful masterpiece, just for you!

Shhh ~ We actually sell to many local hotels...but they may not want you to know they aren't making them.

Sadly, H & H Bagels may have made their last bagel.  In January of 2012, the Wall Street Journal reported that they were "loxed out of their bakery" and lost their lease.  This 40+ year business was an icon to NYC and simply shows the sign of our economic times.  They will be missed.

SHAPIRO'S MATZO BALLS ON TV

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by Sally Shapiro

The gang at Channel 8's morning show Indy Style always have a good time!  Hosts Andi Hauser and Tracy Forner invited fourth generation owner of Shapiro's Delicatessen, Brian Shapiro, to come talk about Mazto balls and the Russian pastry called Rugalach.

Busting into a 25 pound bag of mazto meal, the knife yielding Shapiro has a good time on the set.

A fixture to downtown Indianapolis for the past 107 years, our pastry has graced Passover and Easter trays at many holiday feasts.  Our bakery makes these delicacies fresh daily.  Try all of our flavors: Raspberry, Apricot, Cinnamon, and our newest - Chocolate.  These desserts will leave you wondering why you've never had them before.  (or feeling smart that you've known about them before your friends...)

Sunday, March 4, 2012 by Sally Shapiro

If you have eaten lunch at Shapiro's in Carmel, enjoyed our deli in Indianapolis, or had a delivery of our Corporate Catering, please take a moment and tell us how we did!  We can only improve if you tell us how we're doing.

There are so many places to leave your comments - feel free to visit Trip Advisor, Yelp, Foursquare, or our Facebook Fan Pages.  There are as many places to write a review as there are desserts that we make in our Bakery!  (actually we have more desserts than that but you get the point!)

Thanks for eating at Indianapolis's Premier Jewish Delicatessen.   Still working hard ~ since 1905!

KOSHER STYLE JEWISH FOOD IN INDIANAPOLIS

Saturday, December 10, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is proud to be one of the TOP TEN DELIS IN THE COUNTRY according to USA TODAY.  This is the place to go if you are looking for well known Jewish style food.  Start with our one-of-a-kind corned beef, cooked early every morning in a huge kettle until it is just right.  Servers hand trim the meat and it is sliced for you as you order.  Pair this with our warm Shapiro rye bread, hand sliced.  Potato pancakes (latkes) make a perfect side dish.  Some people like them with applesauce, some with sour cream, and some with nothing at all.  You might also want to try our cabbage borscht or matzo ball soup.  The mazto balls are made from scratch and are everything you would ever want in a matzo ball!  How about a chopped liver sandwich?  It is quite popular on rye bread with a slice of onion.  Step over to the bakery counter and sample the Rugulach.  This hand-made pastry is available in apricot, raspberry, chocolate and cinnamon.  Most folks order a variety because they are all so delicious!  If you are looking for the best place to nosh, look no further than Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana.

WE ARE FAMILY

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is family owned and operated since 1905.  Brian Shapiro is the fourth generation and current owner of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Shapiro's Deli in Carmel, Indiana.  The delicious offerings on the menu have been handed down from past generations, who arrived in the United States from Odessa, Russia at the turn of the century.  Lots of things have changed in this world.  The economy makes running a business more difficult every day, but the best things in life are produced by the hard working family owned businesses in this country and Shapiro's Deli is proud to be among them.  In addition to the Shapiro family heritage we have generations of employees working too.  Wives, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins, you name it - we have it!  Yes, Shapiro's Deli is family owned and proudly teaching our future generations the value of good food, hard work, and how to nosh with the best of them! We celebrate our staff this holiday season!

SAY HELLO TO PORTIA AND MARK

Friday, November 18, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
portia and mark Say "Hello" to two of our managers at Shapiro's Deli!  Portia has been working at the deli in downtown Indianapolis for 4 years.  After working in many different departments, primarily as cashier, she was recently promoted to manager.  Portia is great to work with and always takes great care of her customers.  Mark has been with Shapiro's for 3 years and does double duty by managing at two locations - downtown and in Carmel, Indiana.  Mark is known for going the extra mile.  He also has a keen knowledge of the city and its' landmarks, which is very helpful for our out-of-state visitors.  As you can tell, they are both a bit camera shy.  Say "Hello" next time you see them!

HAVE A SUPER DAY!

Sunday, October 16, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Every business in Indianapolis and the surrounding area is gearing up for Super Bowl 2012...and if they are not, they should be!  We are studying our Indiana history, learning about amenities available in our city, and trying to figure out how everything is going to come together!
icva The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association is a great source of information.  Their Fall 2011/Winter 2012 Visitor Guide is packed with information!  We are not too shy to mention that Shapiro's Deli is recommended on page 14 as one of the places you "Can't Leave Town Without..."  Shapiro's Corned Beef Sandwich is touted as a "mile high stack of tender thin-sliced corned beef.  Don't even think of asking for it on anything but the fresh-baked rye."  We will be sure to wish you A SUPER DAY when you come to visit us in Indy!
