5/5 STARS ON YELP REVIEW

Thursday, February 28, 2013 by Sally Shapiro

Feb 26, 2013  YELP review   5/5 STARS

Kent L. wrote a review on Yelp about his dining experience in downtown Indianapolis eating a sandwich at Shapiro's Delicatessen.   Thanks Kent L.!

From the outside of the red brick Downtown location, it doesn't look like a Jewish delicatessen but go inside to this cafeteria-style layout, get a gander at the many tempting foods at the glass-enclosed counter displays and you know immediately that you're in for the real deal. I like my sandwiches either with rye bread or on onion rolls but the day I visited, it was pastrami on rye with mustard with a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda and it was just a perfect combination. Pastrami that's too lean is dry and lacks flavor, whereas too much fat makes the sandwich oily and Shapiro's pastrami strikes the perfect balance of meat-to-fat ratio. While Shapiro's does have a wide variety of dessert choices, who has room after one of their sandwiches? The corned beef also looked really good but that will have to wait for another trip. The menu prices were quite reasonable for both the quality and quantity of food, which would be several dollars more in places like NYC or L.A. delicatessen and since it looks like many Jewish delicatessens around the country are closing after many years in business, it becomes harder to find one to dine in. I would wholeheartedly return here.

Next time you eat at either Shapiro's Delicatessens, please take a minute to write a review or "check in" at any number of sites!  Zagat, Trip Advisor, Foursquare, Urban Spoons, Facebook.com/ShapirosDeli, Facebook.com/ShapirosCarmel, Twitter = @ShapirosDeli, or fill out a customer comment card available from the cashiers.  If you don't like something, please tell us while you are there so that we can MAKE IT RIGHT!  We want you to have the best meal everytime.  Please find a manager if you need us to change something.

Great Grandfather Louis used to say - every day is opening day!

“Landmark Indy Deli”

Reviewed June 18, 2012 By Duke 2002

NYC, Chicago-all your big cities have 'em-Landmark Eateries-places you cannot visit the Big City without dining there. Shapiro's Deli is one of Indianapolis' Landmarks. Decor is strait out of the 1950's & the food is fabulous! Everything I have ever had here is great-corned beef & cabbage is the best. I am not normally a bread or desert eater-but this place is the exception-all bread baked fresh in house & the cheesecake is downright sinful! Always a big crowd at lunchtime through the week-If you desire a more relaxed atmosphere I would suggest evenings or weekends(although the Sunday after church crowd can be hectic). I have been coming here since I was a kid and have never left hungry or disappointed.

WELCOME TO 2012

Sunday, January 1, 2012 by Tracy Fiddler
Happy New Year to everyone!  2012 has arrived and we are looking forward to serving you the best deli fare in the coming year.  We are serving Corned Beef and Cabbage today, along with black eyed peas to get your new year off to a "lucky" start.  Shapiro's is open until 7 p.m. today.  It is just a few short weeks to the most unique experience to ever visit our city - the Super Bowl!  You will NOT have properly visited Indianapolis unless you stop by Shapiro's Deli for the best corned beef, pastrami, bakery goods, Jewish deli delights, and kosher-style goodness.  Stay tuned for our event schedule.  We are likely to have very extended hours so everyone has a chance to experience just why Shapiro's Deli has been family owned and operated for over 100 years!

KOSHER STYLE JEWISH FOOD IN INDIANAPOLIS

Saturday, December 10, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is proud to be one of the TOP TEN DELIS IN THE COUNTRY according to USA TODAY.  This is the place to go if you are looking for well known Jewish style food.  Start with our one-of-a-kind corned beef, cooked early every morning in a huge kettle until it is just right.  Servers hand trim the meat and it is sliced for you as you order.  Pair this with our warm Shapiro rye bread, hand sliced.  Potato pancakes (latkes) make a perfect side dish.  Some people like them with applesauce, some with sour cream, and some with nothing at all.  You might also want to try our cabbage borscht or matzo ball soup.  The mazto balls are made from scratch and are everything you would ever want in a matzo ball!  How about a chopped liver sandwich?  It is quite popular on rye bread with a slice of onion.  Step over to the bakery counter and sample the Rugulach.  This hand-made pastry is available in apricot, raspberry, chocolate and cinnamon.  Most folks order a variety because they are all so delicious!  If you are looking for the best place to nosh, look no further than Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana.

WE ARE FAMILY

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 by Tracy Fiddler
Shapiro's Deli is family owned and operated since 1905.  Brian Shapiro is the fourth generation and current owner of Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Shapiro's Deli in Carmel, Indiana.  The delicious offerings on the menu have been handed down from past generations, who arrived in the United States from Odessa, Russia at the turn of the century.  Lots of things have changed in this world.  The economy makes running a business more difficult every day, but the best things in life are produced by the hard working family owned businesses in this country and Shapiro's Deli is proud to be among them.  In addition to the Shapiro family heritage we have generations of employees working too.  Wives, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins, you name it - we have it!  Yes, Shapiro's Deli is family owned and proudly teaching our future generations the value of good food, hard work, and how to nosh with the best of them! We celebrate our staff this holiday season!

ATTENTION WEIGHT WATCHERS

Saturday, December 11, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
As a new member of Weight Watchers, I just want to tell everyone that you CAN enjoy good food even when you are watching your weight.  If you are looking for a place to nosh in Indianapolis, stop by Shapiro's Deli.  There are plenty of options for those who are following the new Points Plus Weight Watcher program.  We have lots of fresh fruit - which are now ZERO points!  I have often enjoyed a 6 ounce chopped steak dinner with green beans, onions, and a side of fruit.  This is a 10 point meal, which leaves plenty of room for the rest of your day if you are on the 29 minimum daily points.  Our sandwiches are approximately 6 1/2 ounces of meat.  Look up the points value in your Pocket Guide for the meat you choose.  Feel free to order a sandwich with no bread if that works for you.  Another favorite of mine is the made-from-scratch vegetable soup.  One bowl is approximately 6 points.  With two packets of Saltine crackers you only spend 8 points total on this filling and healthy meal.  There are plenty of salads to choose from with fat-free dressing options.  It costs me a few extra points, but I frequently have the Caesar salad with chicken for lunch.  There is about 4 ounces of chicken, about 1/4 cup of swiss cheese, and a small amount of croutons.  These all have point values in your Pocket Guide.  If you are having breakfast we offer Egg Beaters or Egg Whites, which are a healthy alternative to whole eggs.  It is a challenge to work at one of the best delis in Indianapolis, but thanks to the kosher style food choices I just have to make wise choices.  I will leave the dessert choice up to you!  You'll have to figure out whether or not you can fit this into your program.  Good luck to everyone!

Marc Summers was here last Monday filming this episode for the Food Network.  We don't know the exact air date yet, but Season 3 ends in September and Shapiro's will be featured in Season 4.  We will let you know as soon as we get the exact date.  Marc was kind enough to let us take some pictures - he is incredibly nice.  Here he is with Brandy, our Purchasing Manager.

Thursday, May 27, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

A FUN WEEKEND AT SHAPIRO'S

Monday, April 5, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler
Sitting on break the other day I said to my table mates, "Hey, that looks like the Dalai Lama."  They scoffed and said "No way - he would have lots of security."  I replied, "But he has divine protection, I'm sure.  Why would he need more security than that?"  That was the end of that.   Well evidently he WAS here at Shapiro's!  Wish I had paid more attention.  These little moments are the interesting part of our days on the job.

We have had a fun, but very long, weekend and tonight is the night!  It's not too late to come in and get yourself set up with food from the best kosher style restaurant in Indianapolis. The Carmel, Indiana deli will also be open until 9:00 tonight.  Come on in and get stocked up on some deli favorites to munch on while you watch the NCAA Final Four game tonight.

GO BUTLER BULLDOGS!

By the way, we still have lots of Passover grocery items available - now at 50% off.  John the Baker has made some flourless honey cakes and sponge cakes too.

If you happen to have a hotel room on the north side, don't forget to visit our Carmel, Indiana location during your down time.  Rangeline Road and 123rd Street in Carmel.  This location is open until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and has a full-service breakfast on Saturday and Sunday until 11 a.m.

We of course are rooting for our Indiana teams, Butler and Purdue.  We have some big Kentucky fans here too.  Purdue is playing as I write this, so time will tell!

KOSHER STYLE FOOD OFFERED FROM INDIANAPOLIS

Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Tracy Fiddler

We found out today that Indiana Congressman Andre Carson has a friendly arrangement made with Congressman Steve Scalise from New Orleans for the upcoming game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.  Seems if the Saints lose the game, Congressman Carson's Washington D.C. staff will be receiving some alligator sausage and blackened redfish from the Louisiana region.  If the Colts lose (I can barely type those words) Congressman Scalise and his D.C. staff will be receiving some famous Reuben sandwiches from Shapiro's Deli and some sweets from Long's Bakery.  We are proud that the best kosher style food served in Indianapolis will be enjoyed by folks from New Orleans - if, and that is a HUGE "IF" - the Saints are victorious.  I say fat chance.  Enjoy your alligator sausage Congressman Carson.  When you come home to Indy please stop by Shapiro's for your Reuben! GO COLTS!
